What "dreich" means

If you're Scottish, you already know. If you're not: dreich — say it "dreech," with the same throat-clearing "ch" as in loch — is the word we reach for on the kind of day that's grey, wet, and lingering. Which, in Scotland, is more often than we'd like to admit.

Why we started

It started with an old wool overshirt — years of proper use, finally beyond saving. We went looking for a Scottish equivalent and couldn't find one, so we set out to make it ourselves: clothes we actually wanted to wear, built close to home, and made to survive Scottish weather rather than apologise for it.

How it's made

Everything starts small and stays close to home. The Búrach overshirt is cut from wool woven in Perthshire and made up in small batches by a workshop near Glasgow. We've spent a long time building relationships with people who know what they're doing — Scottish first, then the wider UK. We'd rather use natural materials and make fewer, better things than chase speed or scale. If a piece takes longer to get right, it takes longer.

What we stand for

• Scottish first. We go to Scottish makers before anyone else, then the wider UK.
• Made to last. Fewer, better pieces beat anything fast.
• Small batches. Made properly, not made to a deadline.
• Natural materials. Wool, cotton, and little else.

What's next

The overshirt is the start, not the whole plan. Jumpers, t-shirts, trousers, and more are on the way, made the same way — properly, in small runs, by people we trust. We'd rather grow slowly and get it right than rush and get it wrong.

Because you can't always choose the weather.
